Highlands Virtual School has officially named Resource Teacher Elizabeth Abel as its 2026–2027 Teacher of the Year and Data Operator Carol Walters Francis as the School-Related Employee of the Year. The annual honors recognize outstanding educators and support personnel who demonstrate exceptional commitment, leadership, and service to students and families in the virtual learning environment.

Elizabeth Abel, Teacher of the Year: Serving as a resource teacher, Abel was selected for her innovative approach to student support, commitment to individual learning needs, and dedication to helping online learners thrive academically.
Carol Walters Francis, School-Related Employee of the Year: Working as a flex data operator, Francis plays a crucial role in maintaining smooth administrative operations, managing essential student data, and assisting families with daily school needs.
Both honorees will represent Highlands Virtual School at the district-level recognition program for the School Board of Highlands County later this academic year.
